The masks of Venice in Martigues

Over the weekend of September 5-6, Venetian masked figures take to the streets
of Martigues to meet visitors.
The Venice of Provence takes on a whole new meaning!

Every year, these carnival enthusiasts wear masks and matching hand-sewn costumes
to honor the tradition.
They’ve chosen Martigues as the venue for the Flâneries au Miroir, in the heart of La Venise Provençale.
The 120 masked silhouettes pose gracefully as they stroll among the pedestrians of the town center. Sometimes seated on a bench, sometimes near a fountain, the Venetian costumers play a charming game of seduction. On Saturday evening, the festivities continue with a spellbinding procession featuring Italian music led by a tenor and his symphony orchestra.

In harmony with the strolls, it’s at the Italian village that we meet to savor the products of the Italian terroir. Tommes de fromage, charcuterie, olive oil, truffles, fresh pasta, panettone, Sicilian cannoli, artisanal limoncello…. You’ll succumb to the delicious aromas of this market of a thousand flavors.
The Martigues Italian market takes place over 5 days, from Thursday to Sunday. It includes the Flâneries au Miroir weekend. You’ll find artisans and producers from the Italian region. With its pronounced accent, it’s a guaranteed change of scenery! During the day, Venetian masked men stroll through the streets, putting on a show much appreciated by visitors.
